Twitter has temporarily disabled a feature based on Adobe Flash, after a security researcher demonstrated the feature could be used to hijack user accounts.

“We’ve been notified about a vulnerability in our Flash widget and out of an abundance of caution we’ve disabled access as we assess the situation,” Twitter said on Friday in an update on its status page.

The company said it was not aware of any attacks that had been carried out using the vulnerability.

Mike Bailey, a senior security analyst with Foreground Security, demonstrated the flaw on a dummy Twitter account on Friday. Bailey used an XML file hosted on his server to exploit the weakness and cause the dummy Twitter account to display: “@mckt_ just pwned my Twitter account. Neat.”

The exploit required that a user click on a link while logged in to Twitter, according to Foreground. As a result, Bailey was able to steal the user’s session credentials, giving him full access to the account.

The problem is with a Flash-based widget used to display Twitter updates on websites, according to Bailey.

Twitter said the problem does not affect the JavaScript version of the widget. “Please note that the JavaScript widgets are unaffected and are a good alternative for those of you who had been using the Flash version,” the company stated.

Bailey demonstrated the Twitter bug ahead of a talk called ‘Neat, New and Ridiculous Flash Hacks’ that he is scheduled to give at next month’s Black Hat security conference in Washington DC.

How much would you pay for a mobile device that does only one thing: Send and receive Tweets? A company called Peek is betting $199 and has created just such a device.

Described as the world’s first dedicated Twitter device, the TwitterPeek offers a QWERTY keyboard, color screen, and measures 2.7 x 0.4 x 4 inches. It was introduced on Tuesday and is not unattractive.

The $199 price includes a wireless service plan for the life of the device. A $99 price includes 6 months of service, which then costs $7.95-a-month thereafter. The always-on device promises four days of battery life “in normal use” and promises nationwide wireless coverage.

The device supports a single Twitter account at a time, allowing users to tweet, reply, retweet, download followers, and send direct messages to other users. Access to TwitPics is also possible using the TwitterPeek’s “view content” option.

Who needs this device? That’s a fair question. Smartphones already have Twitter applications, so this is not a great second or third device to carry around.

Presumably, some people are using Twitter as an e-mail replacement and do not want the monthly expense associated with smartphone use. Peek also makes similar e-mail only devices, which seem to address a much larger market (and support five accounts at a time).

The TwitterPeek is available exclusively from Amazon, which also sells the Peek Pronto e-mail device for $299, including a lifetime service contract.

MySpace announced in a blog post on Monday that the company will now offer two-way syncing with Twitter. The service is being rolled out immediately.

According to the company, MySpace users can now update their MySpace status and syndicate that update to their Twitter streams. Twitter updates can also appear in the MySpace user’s “status and mood.” Users can decide if they want status updates to be one-way or two-way.

MySpace said in the blog post that it’s using OAuth to sync with Twitter. According to the company, users will be able to share data between the sites, but all account credentials will be protected, keeping user information “confidential.”

When users post a status update on MySpace and syndicate that to their Twitter feeds, the tweet will feature the message and its link to “make commenting easy” on the user’s MySpace profile. Twitter will display “MySpace” as the service the tweet originated from, similar to its display of TweetDeck, Twitterfeed, and other services that allow users to update their streams away from the site.

So far, MySpace’s Twitter sync is in beta. The company said that it will be adding other networks to sync with soon. For now, you can try out the Twitter sync in your MySpace profile by inputting your Twitter credentials under the “sync” menu in account settings.

AOL’s instant messenger, AIM, becomes on Tuesday the AIM Lifestream and gets support for modern social services Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Flickr, and Delicious.

A multiple-platform suite of products being announced at the TechCrunch50 event will support the service.

In addition to instant messaging, AIM Lifestream will display updates from the social feeds mentioned above and, likewise, enable people to post back to the services. The suite of products, including mobile clients, Mac and Windows desktop apps, and a Web client, will launch on September 22. The current Lifestream Web site shows the development of the project so far. The finished version will bring instant messages into the mix.

The iPhone app for AIM Lifestream is available now, however, because the Apple approval process went much faster than AOL expected, said David Liu, AOL’s senior vice president of global messaging. (You’ll get AIM Lifestream when you download the paid AIM client for the iPhone.)

I tried the iPhone app. It’s a decent combo client, although I found it much better for instant messaging than for Twitter or Facebook. While it is really nice to be able to get social network items and IMs in one client, you don’t get the full visibility and control over your social accounts as you do in a full-featured client like the iPhone app Tweetdeck for Twitter, or Facebook’s own app for Facebook. But if you’re not a heavy user of the other services, the AIM Lifestream client is certainly servicable, and it’s nice to be able to update your AIM status and other sites with just one message.

Liu said that the mobile clients are key to the AIM strategy and that geolocation features will be rolling out. Already, the iPhone client will report your location (if you let it) to your friends. In the future, Liu told me, you’ll be able to see what your friends have said about places near you. Another big part of the Lifestream strategy is AIM’s e-mail service. You’ll be able to use your new AOL e-mail to read and reply to all the same messages you get in your AIM clients.

Finally, AIM won’t be the only IM platform supported. ICQ support is coming soon. Also coming, I was told, is support for other IM networks. Liu wouldn’t say which but claimed that AOL is “having discussions” with the big platforms. That would include Yahoo and Microsoft, as well as Facebook. The Google IM system is is open. Skype support would be a neat trick; I don’t expect it.

AIM Lifestream will end up being a powerful social client due to the sheer number of AIM users who will upgrade from the older version of AIM. And while it’s a great product for AIM power users, I don’t think it’s a good option yet for people whose online social lives revolve around other networks. In my case, for example, I’ll continue to spend time in Twitter-centric clients like Tweetdeck and Seesmic Desktop, because that’s where my people are. And there’s no way AIM is going to pry my wife away from the full Facebook experience.

Even so, AIM Lifestream is a good direction for AOL and I am looking forward to see how this new strategy evolves.

Tweet Funnel

Tweet Funnel

TwitsMAG Exclusive:

TweetFunnel, the Twitter tool for team tweeting, has expanded its feature set to make it even more useful to organizations that have more than one tweeter. New features include: management of multiple accounts, statistics tracking for links using automatically shortened Bit.ly URLs or BudURLs, and the ability to create and save searches. All of this is wrapped in an improved graphical user interface (GUI) that maximizes the use of screen real estate. Those new changes will not be released on their website and blog until later today.

“It was also very important for us to keep the application as easy to use as possible, while still providing a pleasant user experience,” said Wilkens. “That’s why we’ve implemented a new look and feel that’s more polished and makes better use of screen space.”

Now, users can also integrate their Bit.ly or BudURL accounts with TweetFunnel for easy statistics tracking. An administrator simply has to enter their Bit.ly or BudURL API key into TweetFunnel and URLs will be automatically shortened and tracked. This makes it easy for tweeting organizations to see what content is most effective.

With all of the information that’s within Twitter, search is vital for monitoring conversations. TweetFunnel users can not only search, but can save searches for the topics most important to them with just a click.

Of course, these new features are all in addition to the multi-user tweeting functionality that TweetFunnel is famous for—editorial control and the ability to monitor, assign and schedule tweets. TweetFunnel is currently in beta and free to users.

Since its release in late May, thousands of businesses, non-profits, news organizations, sports teams, civic groups and other organizations have signed up for the service. TweetFunnel has been described as “water wings for Twitter,” as it makes it easy for any organization to dip its toe into the Twitter stream.

“We’re always working on new features, but we’re really proud of the latest set of enhancements. We think TweetFunnel provides the core functionality that any business, non-profit or other organization needs to make a coordinated Twitter effort,” said Wilkens.
