Twitter has enhanced geolocation services provided on its messaging service by buying Mixer Labs, the company said on Wednesday.

Mixer Labs’ GeoAPI is a service that helps developers build geolocation-aware applications for the Twitter service, a Twitter official wrote in a blog entry. Software using the service will allow Twitter users to tag the location where a message was written.

Developers will be able to harness the GeoAPI engine to add relevant location information to Twitter messages. Such a service could help audiences receive Twitter messages based on location, the company wrote.

Adding location-based references could also enhance services like finding friends or local businesses, the company wrote. Users will also be able to search where an event is happening.

In August the company previewed expanded location support for developers, and last month the company launched a geotagging API for its service.

Twitter did not immediately respond to comment on how much it paid for Mixer Labs.

Thanks to a new tool, organizing and navigating the Twitter accounts that you follow is about to get a lot easier. According to a blog post from Twitter, a limited number of users in the coming days will be able to sort their friends into lists (much like Facebook’s ‘Lists’ feature). Until now, users seeking more control over their followers had to use cumbersome solutions from third-party apps like TweetDeck (we love the app, but ‘groups’ management is still clunky). Too bad third party programs got the right idea before Twitter itself implemented group.

Twitter’s ‘Lists’ project lead Nick Kallen described the new feature’s usefulness: “For example, you could create a list of the funniest Twitter accounts of all time, athletes, local businesses, friends, or any compilation that makes sense.” If you choose to make your lists public, other users can browse them or even subscribe to them, making it easier to discover new and interesting users.
After the initial testing period, this feature should become available to everyone in the Twitter-verse. The Telegraph reports that the feature will also be made available to third-party developers, which means your favorite iPhone or BlackBerry Twitter app may support the features soon.

Evan Williams and Biz Stone of Twitter

Evan Williams and Biz Stone of Twitter

The one thing you can say for certain about Twitter is that it makes a terrible first impression. You hear about this new service that lets you send 140-character updates to your “followers,” and you think, Why does the world need this, exactly? It’s not as if we were all sitting around four years ago scratching our heads and saying, “If only there were a technology that would allow me to send a message to my 50 friends, alerting them in real time about my choice of breakfast cereal.”

I, too, was skeptical at first. I had met Evan Williams, Twitter’s co-creator, a couple of times in the dotcom ’90s when he was launching Blogger.com. Back then, what people worried about was the threat that blogging posed to our attention span, with telegraphic, two-paragraph blog posts replacing long-format articles and books. With Twitter, Williams was launching a communications platform that limited you to a couple of sentences at most. What was next? Software that let you send a single punctuation mark to describe your mood? (Read full story from time.com’s website)

Twitter is suspending the accounts of some users whose computers have fallen victim to a well-known piece of malicious software that has targeted other sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

The malware, Koobface, is designed to spread itself by checking to see if person is logged into a social network. It will then post fraudulent messages on the person’s Twitter account trying to entice friends to click the link, which then leads to a malicious Web site that tries to infect the PC.

The popular microblogging service has had a strong impact as a new communication platform, such as providing on-the-ground insight from participants in the recent protests over the presidential election in Iran. But it is also being targeted by fraudsters and hackers, who using it as a way to infect people’s PCs with malicious software.

Twitter is the latest site to be targeted by a Koobface variant, said Rik Ferguson, senior security advisor for Trend Micro. Other sites have included Bebo, Hi5, Friendster and LiveJournal, according to the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team.

“Koobface has a long, inglorious history and has been relatively successful at infecting machines,” Ferguson said.

At least a couple hundred accounts have been infected by Koobface’s latest efforts, according to Ryan Flores, an advanced threats researcher, writing on Trend’s blog. When it made its first appearance a couple of weeks ago on Twitter, Koobface was just sending out three shortened URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) leading to malware. Flores wrote that Koobface is sending out more bad links this time around. (Full story here…)

Twitter has captured peoples’ imaginations like nothing else on the web in years. It’s growing fast, gets talked about all the time in other media, has fostered a huge developer community and gets used in more ways than anyone could have thought possible. It’s a great tool for journalists, for students, for knitters, for marketers and for people in many other walks of life.

What if the people working at Twitter Inc. aren’t using the service the way many of its power users are, though? We’ve examined the posting and following habits of people on the company’s staff and found that Twitter team members don’t follow very many other people, they aren’t following many of the top developers in their own community and they don’t even Tweet very much. This could be cause for concern among power users who depend on the service as it exists now, much less for those hoping it will be developed for even more powerful use cases.

Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey, said this week that he hopes the service will someday be just like electricity, something everyone uses but few feel the need to talk about. To follow that analogy, if you were someone who used a heavy duty washer and dryer in your home and found out that the electric company didn’t employ people who regularly used any appliances bigger than a toaster – wouldn’t you be a little concerned about the long term viability of your power supply?

Here are a few data points we’ve picked out, followed by a response we got from Twitter CEO, Evan Williams, when we asked about these issues. Read more…
