VANCOUVER—Canada is a hit with Twitter followers of guidebook publisher Lonely Planet in the wake of the Vancouver Olympics, according to a poll conducted this month by the Canadian Tourism Commission.

Almost three-quarters of the 735 respondents felt Canada was No. 1 in the world among countries that “have it all,” including wilderness escapes, cosmopolitan cities and a friendly population, said a CTC news release.

The Vancouver Olympics appear to have delivered on their promise of marketing the entire country to the world, according to a survey.

As well, just over 60 per cent felt that more people are now considering Canada for their next vacation as a result of the Olympics.

The unscientific poll of the international publisher’s Twitter audience was intended as a “temperature check post-Olympics,” said CTC publicist James Loftus.

The commission released the poll results Thursday along with picks by Canadian Olympic athletes for “gold medal” vacations.

Alexandre Bilodeau, winner in the 2010 men’s moguls, chose Victoria: “I went there recently for training and went cycling, road biking, surfing and played hockey all in the same place, which is great.”

Jon Montgomery, who won in skeleton, said his idea of a gold-medal itinerary is to go home to Russell, Manitoba.

“We love going to Riding Mountain National Park which is about an hour away from Russell and my folks have a cabin there.”

After the launch of Google’s real-time search, in December, I predicted that Twitter would get a boost in traffic after declining visitor counts since peaking during the summer of 2009.

Looks like I was right.

ComScore data show the number of unique visitors to Twitter increased by 9 percent from December 2009 to January 2010. The 21.79 million unique Twitter visitors in January was an all-time high, just over the 21.25 million visitors that comScore tracked in July 2009. December 2009 unique visitors were up 3.1 percent over November, so Google’s real-time search, which launched on December 7,  appeared to have impact on Twitter for the month of December as well.

Data from Experian Hitwise data suggest that Google is the main source of the additional traffic — the share of Twitter’s traffic coming from Google increased by 9 percent when comparing the week ending December 5 to the week ending February 13 (from 12.8 percent to 14 percent). Hitwise showed a modest increase of 5 percent in market share of US visits to Twitter in that time period.

It’s no surprise that Google launched Buzz last week after paying an estimated $15 million for Twitter’s feed. Certainly Google wants to keep more of that traffic in its own network, where it can serve users more ads.

However, this new data is encouraging for Twitter — it is maintaining its US share while growing internationally and growing the use of its service on third-party applications through its APIs. With a completely open social network where users can have as much control as they want over the amount of personal information they share, Twitter has got a lot going for it over Google Buzz. Unfortunately, since Google Buzz is embedded in Gmail, we won’t be able to measure its impact. If someone does come up with a reliable way to measure Google Buzz, let me know!

6S Marketing, a Vancouver-based Internet marketing firm conducted a survey to its database of over 10,000 people on their use of social media.

Here’s some interesting data from 6S Marketing,

  • 70% of Canadians say they use social media.
  • Facebook is the most popular social networking site with 70% of people surveyed currently having an account.
  • 47% of Canadians use Twitter and the majority of users are 19 – 25 years of age.
  • Only 20% of people surveyed currently use MySpace.
  • YouTube & Flickr are the most popular social media sites with 38% & 29% (respectively) of people surveyed using the sites.
  • 42% of Canadians do not blog, while 58% do blog.
  • 74% of people who blog, do so for personal purposes, 57% blog for work and 35% blog for both.
  • 9% of people surveyed have hired an employee online and 22% have received a job offer online. 69% have done neither.
  • 61% of businesses said they track what people are saying about their brand online.

The guy who posted Twitter's 5 billionth tweet. (Credit: Robin Sloan's Facebook profile)

Former Current Media executive Robin Sloan appears to have posted Twitter’s 5 billionth tweet, in the form of a reply to another user that otherwise read only “Oh lord.”

The landmark status of Sloan’s tweet, which he has nicknamed “The Pentagigatweet,” appears to have been derived from the fact that the number at the end of a tweet’s URL is apparently the total count of tweets that have been posted until that point. We’ve e-mailed Twitter co-founder Biz Stone to verify and will update if and when we hear back.

It’s sort of fitting that Twitter’s 5 billionth tweet came not from one of the celebrities or marketers who have flooded the service in recent months, but from one of the quirky Bay Area dot-com nerds who formed its first loyal pack of users.

Sloan, who lives in San Francisco, recently departed his gig at Current–which is headquartered only a few blocks away from Twitter’s own home base in the South of Market neighborhood–to write a novel, “Mr. Penumbra’s Twenty-Four-Hour Book Store,” which he is funding through creative-microfinance site Kickstarter.

He may have just gotten a convenient leg up in publicity.

Meanwhile, some third-party observers have been remarking that Twitter’s rapid growth may be slowing down. The company recently raised another round of funding at a valuation somewhere in the neighborhood of $1 billion.
