Finding productivity on Twitter, especially if you are a large company or one that manages several profiles for clients, can be quite difficult. It’s especially difficult to build up a strong following. Fortunately, Tweet Spinner is here to help. Tweet Spinner is a powerful application that manages the more high level management Twitter tasks for you, from managing followers/friends to changing your profile design and then some.

Tweet Spinner Feature Set

Tweet Spinner features four main features. We’ll get into these in detail in the next sections.

  • Direct message management.  Consider spam protection for your email inbox ported over Twitter.  Sadly, this feature has become necessary, and TweetSpinner helps you maintain anti-spam rules to weed out the junk.
  • Profile design rotator. Tweet Spinner actually lets you schedule different Twitter backgrounds, bios, and profiles, so that you can see which profile types might get the most engagement.  It also can be used to tell your followers more about you (and to encourage them to check your page more often!)
  • Twitter CRM. Tweet Spinner is a CRM tool too, allowing you to connect with potential followers. You can find potential customers by location, view followers of your competitors and “mimic follow” them, analyze keywords you use that elicit the most response, and more. The tool will also prevent you from following spammer accounts through a variety of tactics.
  • Scheduled Tweets and DMs. For a big company account, it’s difficult to actually engage all day long (and all week long, especially if you’re a 9-5 shop).  Therefore, you have the ability to schedule messages and to personalize them too.

Direct Message Management

When it comes to direct messages, TweetSpinner understands that you probably have been inundated with messaging that you’re not interested in. And while you could keep those messages stored on Twitter’s server, it might be in your best interest to have them stored to a separate account in the event that Twitter goes down or for ease of searching. With Tweet Spinner, you get a DM archive listed in an easy-to-read page that is searchable (via Ctrl+F on your keyboard; additional search facilities would be useful for accounts with thousands of DMs). You can choose to delete spam DMs or all DMs. Personally, I think something along the lines of an exportable data set would be excellent, but I’m a digital pack rat. :)

Spam management is offered within Tweet Spinner as well. In Tweet Spinner, spam management can only be applied to messages in your inbox, so if you’ve already archived your DMs, there is no need to run this as it will not find anything. You can choose whether to archive spam (do you really need to wade through those “is this really you?!” messages?) or not. You can also choose a very aggressive spam filtering method that will consider any DM with a URL as spam.

Both archival and spam filtering can be scheduled. This is a subscriber-only feature and occurs every four hours. You cannot change the schedule.

Follower Manager

One of the niftier features of Tweet Spinner is the follower manager. This is where you really can go golden in terms of finding targeted followers but ensuring that those you follow are relevant.

Filters

Right under the “Follower Manager” heading, you see some powerful filtering options that you are recommended to take advantage of. The first.. Read More

Some think Google Buzz could be the next huge social platform. Others think it’s one big privacy nightmare. With its launch week drawing to an end, we pinged our friends at Crimson Hexagon for analysis of Twitter user’s opinions.

The results, not surprisingly, are incredibly mixed. 16 percent of the tweets analyzed were characterized as positive, while 14 percent simply express curiosity. The much talked about privacy issues that Google has already moved to address garnered 15 percent of the tweet activity, though a full 50 percent either don’t like Buzz or are already claiming to be done with it. Somewhat surprisingly, 6 percent expressed loyalty to Twitter in their comments – a sign that some view Buzz as a competitive threat.

The overall buzz, one way or another, has been plentiful. According to another analytics firm – Trendrr – Buzz garnered more tweet volume than Google’s Nexus One launch, with a peak of nearly a quarter of a million tweets on Tuesday.

People logging on to their Twitter accounts this morning found a new feature waiting for them.

The micro-blogging site had disclosed last night that the new Local Trends feature would be added to the site today. It’s designed to keep Twitter users up to date with the hottest topics being Twittered in a specific geographic location.

Pick Your Location On Twitter

Pick Your Location On Twitter

“Local Trends will allow you to learn more about the nuances in our world and discover even more relevant topics that might matter to you,” wrote Twitter’s Jenna Dawn on the company’s blog site. “The big events that come up around the world will always become a global conversation, but what about the big events that only happen in your world that only matter to those around you? Or the slight differences in the way Californians perceive an event, like Obama’s election victory, versus those Sao Paulo, Brazil?”

Right now, there aren’t many locations — users initially have only 13 cities and six countries around the world to choose from.

Twitter may need such new to keep its users engaged on the site. RJMetrics, Inc. yesterday released a study showing that the number of Twitter users has climbed to a lofty 75 million, but that the growth rate of new users is slowing. The study also found that a lot of current Twitterers are inactive.

According to the findings, only 17% of all Twitter accounts Twittered last month. That’s down from more than 70% in early 2007 when Twitter was a fledgling company with far, far fewer users.

The report said that Twitter has between 10 million and 15 million active tweeters.

How much would you pay for a mobile device that does only one thing: Send and receive Tweets? A company called Peek is betting $199 and has created just such a device.

Described as the world’s first dedicated Twitter device, the TwitterPeek offers a QWERTY keyboard, color screen, and measures 2.7 x 0.4 x 4 inches. It was introduced on Tuesday and is not unattractive.

The $199 price includes a wireless service plan for the life of the device. A $99 price includes 6 months of service, which then costs $7.95-a-month thereafter. The always-on device promises four days of battery life “in normal use” and promises nationwide wireless coverage.

The device supports a single Twitter account at a time, allowing users to tweet, reply, retweet, download followers, and send direct messages to other users. Access to TwitPics is also possible using the TwitterPeek’s “view content” option.

Who needs this device? That’s a fair question. Smartphones already have Twitter applications, so this is not a great second or third device to carry around.

Presumably, some people are using Twitter as an e-mail replacement and do not want the monthly expense associated with smartphone use. Peek also makes similar e-mail only devices, which seem to address a much larger market (and support five accounts at a time).

The TwitterPeek is available exclusively from Amazon, which also sells the Peek Pronto e-mail device for $299, including a lifetime service contract.

Thanks to a new tool, organizing and navigating the Twitter accounts that you follow is about to get a lot easier. According to a blog post from Twitter, a limited number of users in the coming days will be able to sort their friends into lists (much like Facebook’s ‘Lists’ feature). Until now, users seeking more control over their followers had to use cumbersome solutions from third-party apps like TweetDeck (we love the app, but ‘groups’ management is still clunky). Too bad third party programs got the right idea before Twitter itself implemented group.

Twitter’s ‘Lists’ project lead Nick Kallen described the new feature’s usefulness: “For example, you could create a list of the funniest Twitter accounts of all time, athletes, local businesses, friends, or any compilation that makes sense.” If you choose to make your lists public, other users can browse them or even subscribe to them, making it easier to discover new and interesting users.
After the initial testing period, this feature should become available to everyone in the Twitter-verse. The Telegraph reports that the feature will also be made available to third-party developers, which means your favorite iPhone or BlackBerry Twitter app may support the features soon.

Twitter cracks down on fake accounts amid legal threats

In the past, the instant blogging site has seemed to tolerate fake accounts, even though some have attracted large numbers of followers and featured dubious claims about celebrities’ lives.

But now Tony La Russa, the coach of a US baseball team, has launched legal action over a fake account which he said featured “hurtful” comments about the deaths of two of his players.

The actor Ewan McGregor is also said to be considering legal action after nearly 20,000 followers of a bogus account set up in his name read updates about his personal life.

Other false accounts on Twitter include one in the name of Britney Spears, another for the Dalai Lama and one for the Queen.

Earlier this summer, the Foreign Secretary David Miliband was forced to deny comments attributed to him about the death of Michael Jackson.

Another Tweeter pretended to be jailed record producer Phil Spector, writing from his prison cell and another had former Mirror editor and Britain’s Got Talent judge congratulating followers for voting for Susan Boyle.

A fake Twitter set up account for George W. Bush attracted 1,100 followers. Recently, the hoaxer had the former US President saying of the Queen’s birthday: “Queenie Lizzie’s birthday party today. She’s lookin’ good for 110 years old, or however old she is.”

The fake profiles has even led to one enterprising individual setting up a website aimed a verifying Twitter accounts. Valebrity founder Steven Livingstone believes many of the fake accounts are set up to carry out direct marketing.

“People are making a lot of money out of it. Nobody knows who’s who on these sites,” he said.

Twitter struggles to prevent fake accounts being set up because it does not request proof of identity and until now, has tolerated them provided they do not claim to be genuine.

But following complaints, the website, which has six million users, is now testing a new system that guarantees genuine accounts with a tick next to the name.

“We’re working to establish authenticity, starting with well-known accounts that have had problems with impersonation or identity confusion,” a Twitter spokesman said.
