Twitter and Research In Motion have released an official application for BlackBerry users to interact with the popular microblogging and social networking site.
The two companies worked together to develop the free application, according to Kevin Thau, from Twitter’s mobile products and partnerships team.
“When you talk about messaging and mobile phones, BlackBerry immediately comes to mind and it was no surprise to us that it has become one of the most popular mobile platforms for Twitter around the world,” Thau wrote in an official blog post.
The application features real-time push of Twitter direct messages, browser integration for Web links in “tweets,” an interface whose look-and-feel can be customized, recognition of Twitter @usernames linked to the users’ profiles and a search engine.
The interface is available in English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Brazilian Portuguese.
Social media companies like Twitter and Facebook are busy trying to strengthen mobile versions of their sites and mobile applications, as more and more people become comfortable with posting status updates, checking friends’ profiles and publishing photos and videos from their smartphones.

Good news, crackberry addicts! Research In Motion has announced that it will begin rolling out the native Twitter application for BlackBerry smartphones next week on Wednesday, March 31. The information comes directly from the RIM/BlackBerry booth at the international Cellular Telephone Industries Association [CTIA] Wireless 2010 convention in Las Vegas. It wasn’t too long ago that RIM promised that the Twitter app was going to be released soon, and this time it appears that the Waterloo-based company kept its word.
We first learned about the native Twitter app for BlackBerry back in September of last year. Then on February 11, Research In Motion released an invite-only beta of the application to a group of selected bloggers and users.
The application looks very similar to the current native Facebook app for the BlackBerry platform. Early reviewers have mixed opinions about it. Though the most important opinion is that of the end-users. Those who use Twitter and BlackBerry smartphones will not have to wait long to give the application a try.
Erictric will let you know once the Twitter app for BlackBerry starts rolling out with the respective download information.

New web client set to roll out soon
Twitter, as you might have heard, is massively, world-conqueringly popular. One thing that must really get on the company’s nerves, however, (apart form its inability to turn any serious profit from the thing) is that the vast majority of people who access it via mobile do so using third party apps.
To combat this, Twitter has just announced an updated look to its mobile web interface, in the hope that users will switch over to their mobile’s standard web browser to better view the site – and therefore stop paying for apps that offer no real advantage.
Twittermobile’s Leland Rechis said of the update: “It’s got a great new look, and has some great new touches that will make your mobile experience on Twitter a bit more fun and a lot more helpful.”
The update has been seen by only a selected few mobile users, but is set to roll out properly in the near future.

How much would you pay for a mobile device that does only one thing: Send and receive Tweets? A company called Peek is betting $199 and has created just such a device.
Described as the world’s first dedicated Twitter device, the TwitterPeek offers a QWERTY keyboard, color screen, and measures 2.7 x 0.4 x 4 inches. It was introduced on Tuesday and is not unattractive.
The $199 price includes a wireless service plan for the life of the device. A $99 price includes 6 months of service, which then costs $7.95-a-month thereafter. The always-on device promises four days of battery life “in normal use” and promises nationwide wireless coverage.
The device supports a single Twitter account at a time, allowing users to tweet, reply, retweet, download followers, and send direct messages to other users. Access to TwitPics is also possible using the TwitterPeek’s “view content” option.
Who needs this device? That’s a fair question. Smartphones already have Twitter applications, so this is not a great second or third device to carry around.
Presumably, some people are using Twitter as an e-mail replacement and do not want the monthly expense associated with smartphone use. Peek also makes similar e-mail only devices, which seem to address a much larger market (and support five accounts at a time).
The TwitterPeek is available exclusively from Amazon, which also sells the Peek Pronto e-mail device for $299, including a lifetime service contract.
A new face of the renowned social networking site has now surfaced, Twitter recently teamed up with Indian network carrier Airtel to introduce SMS tweets. The SMS service by means of Twitter was earlier launched in several countries including US, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.
According to the Official Twitter Blog, Airtel subscribers can now send tweets at standard rates and receive tweets for free. Apparently, the tie-up with Twitter would be exclusive just for four weeks, indicating that after that period, the service may also be offered by other service providers in India. Presently, the ‘tweeting’ service in India works only on a web or a WAP site.
Apparently, users can send tweets from their Airtel mobile phones just for Re. 1. Reportedly, Bharti Airtel is offering people in every city, village, remote taluk and even the smallest panchayat, the chance to connect to Twitter with no additional fees.
A year ago, Twitter SMS updates were available in India but later Twitter suspended the SMS updates because of the cost associated with them. Subscribers can check out the Twitter service by texting START to 53000 by means of their Airtel handset.
