Think you’re such a social media expert that you could tweet for a living? Well, President Obama is looking for an official social networks manager, and you might be just the tech whiz for the job.
According to President Obama’s website, The Democratic National Committee and Organizing for America is in the market for a new hire. According to the Wall Street Journal, Mia Cambronero, who currently holds the position, said, “[I] will be stepping down from my infamous role as ‘Barack Obama’s twitterer… We’re looking for someone who is available to start immediately.”
And what exactly are they looking for over at the White House? According to the job posting:
“The Social Networks Manager is responsible for maintaining the Democratic Party and Organizing for America accounts on all social networks (such as Facebook , Twitter and MySpace accounts, etc.) The Social Networks Manager works closely with the rest of the New Media department to execute grassroots campaigns to advance the President’s agenda for change.”
Said person must also be willing to work hard — “this isn’t a 9-5 job,” the posting said — and be “passionate about engaging millions of Americans in advancing President Obama’s agenda and changing the country.” Yeah, that’s not daunting at all.
Social media has been integral to President Obama’s career since the beginning. He launched his Twitter account back in 2007 (although he only really tweeted for the first time last month to support Haiti relief efforts after admitting back in November that he was too clumsy to use the microblogging tool), and recently used YouTube to engage with the nation after the State of the Union address.
Although both the Obama and White House Twitter feeds used to read like a stream of press releases, the tweets have become much more lively in the ensuing months. Whoever fills this new position will have to continue to up the ante when it comes to engaging with the American people. Will you apply?

MySpace was good—too good, in hindsight—to Tila Tequila. Twitter wasn’t. So earlier this morning, she quit.
Now how are we supposed to know when Tila’s claiming to be pregnant, calling out potential baby daddies, posting her cell phone number, adopting Haitian babies, announcing that she’s put herself on suicide watch, mourning the loss of her fiancée or otherwise exploiting her caps lock button?
“Fans are saying #TilaDontLeave I’m sorry but I have to go my loves,” read her last series of tweets. “A baby is on the way…..Deleting my page in 3, 2……..
“Andddddd 1……..#TilaDontLeave but I’m out! Had lots of fun with you all and Love you, miss you but maybe I’ll sign up again 1 day..bye”
True to her word (for maybe the first time ever), Tequila’s Twitter account has been shut down.
“I love you all and will miss you here on Twitter! We have had our fun times together, but my Time on Twitter has run it’s course! Deleting.”
Deleting, but in her own sweet time, as nine more tweets were posted before her final good-bye.
“GOODBYE TWITTER!!! I WILL MISS YOU ALL! ACTUALLY AFTER THIS TWEET I WILL GIVE YOU 15 MORE MINUTES THEN I WILL DELETE MY PAGE NOW!”
Still, should anyone out there be curious as to the goings-on in Tila’s life, she’s left her forwarding information—her official blog, Tila’s Hot Spot, on which she’s already posted two journal messages today.
And in case anyone wanted the inside track as to why Tequila shut down her Twitter account, here it is: “Cuz Piggy face Perez is on there and he’s so fat and ugly and I just felt disgusted being on the same community with him.”
The pot then referred to the kettle as a “waste of space” and announced plans to launch her own celebrity gossip blog—TilaTequilaOMG.com—in about three weeks’ time.
Apparently, there’s about to be a gap in the market.
“PIGGY PEREZ IS SO JEALOUS OF ME!…HE KNOWS THAT MY BLOG WILL BLOW HIS S—TY BLOG OUT OF THE WATER!!!
Last we checked, Perez was still publishing. And the Twitterverse was humming along without a certain someone.

Brittany Murphy’s death made news early this morning, bringing shock to celebrity pals and allowing Twitter accounts to become a forum for sorrow.
One of the firsts to respond to the news was Kim Kardashian saying, “I am in shock that Britney Murphy has died! Clueless is my all time favorite movie. My prayers go out to her family & husband.”
To follow was former Just Married co-star Ashton Kutcher: “2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon”, later adding, “see you on the other side kid.”
Hilary Duff said, “I’m still in shock, I’m just grateful for life and still having it…RIP Brittany Murphy.”
Soleil Moon Frye tweeted, “RIP sweet Brittany. I will never forget the beautiful school girl you were and woman you became. RT @aplusk see you on the other side kid.”
And new mom Kendra Wilkinson was shocked to hear the news also, saying, “OMG RIP BRITTANY MURPHY!!!! She was one of the nicest celebs ive ever met..so sad!!!!!” To see other celebs comments, words of support and tweets of shock about Murphy’s death, click here.
While Murphy’s husband, screenwriter Simon Monjack, has asked the body not be autopsied, the Los Angeles County Chief Coroner Ed Winter says “other issues” have led the coroner to schedule an autopsy in the upcoming days.
Murphy, who was seen very thin earlier this month, has been accused of eating disorders and past cocaine abuse in the past.
According to RadarOnline.com, Murphy denied the allegations in 2005 saying, “I have never tried it in my entire life. I’ve never even seen it…I am also way too high-strung. I can’t even take a Sudafed. Can you imagine? My God. I think my heart would explode.”

Twoddler: Twittering Toddlers from Bart Swennen on Vimeo.
A Belgian design team has envisioned a future in which babies no longer need to go through the hassle of crying. They can just update their online status.
The team out of Hasselt University has combined a basic Fisher-Price Playstation with the social networking site Twitter. By manipulating the knobs and doodads on the toy, the baby sends an automatic update to his/her Twitter account, which the inventors have renamed Twoddler.
The system “interprets” the child’s choice and frequency of target on the board and translates it into a predetermined message.
Here’s how the design team says it would work: “When Yorin plays with mommy’s picture (one of the buttons features a woman’s face) for over three minutes, a Twitter message will be posted saying, “#Mommy_Yorin Yorin misses Mommy and looks forward to playing with her this evening.”
Creepy.
The technology is still rudimentary, but it was impressive enough to take first place in the 2009 Innovative and Creative Applications, given to top Belgian designers.
It’s not clear if the application will ever make it to market. Or if Twitter will sue Belgium back into the Stone Age as a result.

How much would you pay for a mobile device that does only one thing: Send and receive Tweets? A company called Peek is betting $199 and has created just such a device.
Described as the world’s first dedicated Twitter device, the TwitterPeek offers a QWERTY keyboard, color screen, and measures 2.7 x 0.4 x 4 inches. It was introduced on Tuesday and is not unattractive.
The $199 price includes a wireless service plan for the life of the device. A $99 price includes 6 months of service, which then costs $7.95-a-month thereafter. The always-on device promises four days of battery life “in normal use” and promises nationwide wireless coverage.
The device supports a single Twitter account at a time, allowing users to tweet, reply, retweet, download followers, and send direct messages to other users. Access to TwitPics is also possible using the TwitterPeek’s “view content” option.
Who needs this device? That’s a fair question. Smartphones already have Twitter applications, so this is not a great second or third device to carry around.
Presumably, some people are using Twitter as an e-mail replacement and do not want the monthly expense associated with smartphone use. Peek also makes similar e-mail only devices, which seem to address a much larger market (and support five accounts at a time).
The TwitterPeek is available exclusively from Amazon, which also sells the Peek Pronto e-mail device for $299, including a lifetime service contract.

Twitter was accused yesterday of giving Google access to private user accounts, apparently including high-profile micro-bloggers such as former US president Bill Clinton.
Google has been able to crawl through Clinton’s tweets and display them in search results, even though Clinton protected his accounts so that only chosen contacts could see his updates, according to a Los Angeles Times blog post.
However, it now appears that the Clinton tweets that Google displayed, which ranged from his thoughts on Hillary Clinton to John Edwards, have come from a fake Clinton account, appropriately named ‘notbillclinton’.
Commentators have also said that the other protected accounts to which Google apparently had access were probably not protected when they were first cached by Google.
If Twitter had an agreement in place with Google that allows it to search through all of its tweets, the news would be significant because it would have shown favouritism to Google over its major search rival Microsoft.
Earlier this month it was reported that Twitter was in talks with Google and Microsoft about allowing the search companies to license feeds from the micro-blogging service.
Twitter could not be reached for comment at the time of writing.

The guy who posted Twitter's 5 billionth tweet. (Credit: Robin Sloan's Facebook profile)
Article Source: cnet news
Former Current Media executive Robin Sloan appears to have posted Twitter’s 5 billionth tweet, in the form of a reply to another user that otherwise read only “Oh lord.”
The landmark status of Sloan’s tweet, which he has nicknamed “The Pentagigatweet,” appears to have been derived from the fact that the number at the end of a tweet’s URL is apparently the total count of tweets that have been posted until that point. We’ve e-mailed Twitter co-founder Biz Stone to verify and will update if and when we hear back.
It’s sort of fitting that Twitter’s 5 billionth tweet came not from one of the celebrities or marketers who have flooded the service in recent months, but from one of the quirky Bay Area dot-com nerds who formed its first loyal pack of users.
Sloan, who lives in San Francisco, recently departed his gig at Current–which is headquartered only a few blocks away from Twitter’s own home base in the South of Market neighborhood–to write a novel, “Mr. Penumbra’s Twenty-Four-Hour Book Store,” which he is funding through creative-microfinance site Kickstarter.
He may have just gotten a convenient leg up in publicity.
Meanwhile, some third-party observers have been remarking that Twitter’s rapid growth may be slowing down. The company recently raised another round of funding at a valuation somewhere in the neighborhood of $1 billion.
