Twitter will reportedly soon get its own external sharing tool that will help both users and publishers share content on the popular social publishing platform. The Tweet Button

Based on internal company documents, blog Mashable on Wednesday unearthed details on the “Tweet Button” program, which centers on an embeddable sharing button. When put on third-party sites, it will allow users to share whatever content they’re looking at, while it keeps track of how many times that particular URL has been retweeted by other Twitter users.

Sound familiar? If you look at the top of this post, you’ll see that such a feature has existed for the past year and a half thanks to Tweetmeme. Beyond offering up these buttons to publishers, Tweetmeme also has a Digg-like front page of the most popular content from the sites that use it. Last month the company also launched a pro version of its service for large publishers that want to re-brand the look and feel of the dialog that comes up when you click on these buttons, as well as offering up support for integrating multiple analytics tracking tools.

Twitter’s initial offering looks to be less expansive, though that could just be the beginning of something much larger. Tweetmeme charges up to $5,000 a year for publishers to use the paid versions of its service, so something competitive from Twitter later on down the line could make for an additional revenue stream.

Mashable thinks the service could be here as early as Thursday. In the meantime, the embed code for the new Tweet Button does not work on all Twitter user accounts.

Twitter announced it was planning to add location data to tweets back in August. Now the geolocation functionality is complete and you can give permission for Twitter to take down your movements.

Giving location information to Twitter is an opt-in process. To enable Twitter’s function to add geographic information to your tweets, you simply have to hop over to the Account section at Twitter.com.

Scroll down and you’ll find the location section of the Twitter settings. There’s a checkbox to enable geotagging and big friendly button that will allow you to delete all your historical location data, just in case your being tracked by assassins or you know, just relish your privacy.

Twitter’s also tweaked its privacy policy to include the new geotagging feature. It also reiterates to users that items posted to Twitter are public unless they make their Twitter stream private.

Twitter’s geolocation features do not actually work on Twitter.com yet however but will rolled out as part of third party applications like Tweetdeck over the next few weeks.

The addition of geolocation information to tweets should also mean that Twitter is able to create more effective local lists of trending topics.

Thanks to a new tool, organizing and navigating the Twitter accounts that you follow is about to get a lot easier. According to a blog post from Twitter, a limited number of users in the coming days will be able to sort their friends into lists (much like Facebook’s ‘Lists’ feature). Until now, users seeking more control over their followers had to use cumbersome solutions from third-party apps like TweetDeck (we love the app, but ‘groups’ management is still clunky). Too bad third party programs got the right idea before Twitter itself implemented group.

Twitter’s ‘Lists’ project lead Nick Kallen described the new feature’s usefulness: “For example, you could create a list of the funniest Twitter accounts of all time, athletes, local businesses, friends, or any compilation that makes sense.” If you choose to make your lists public, other users can browse them or even subscribe to them, making it easier to discover new and interesting users.
After the initial testing period, this feature should become available to everyone in the Twitter-verse. The Telegraph reports that the feature will also be made available to third-party developers, which means your favorite iPhone or BlackBerry Twitter app may support the features soon.

Twitter is suspending the accounts of some users whose computers have fallen victim to a well-known piece of malicious software that has targeted other sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

The malware, Koobface, is designed to spread itself by checking to see if person is logged into a social network. It will then post fraudulent messages on the person’s Twitter account trying to entice friends to click the link, which then leads to a malicious Web site that tries to infect the PC.

The popular microblogging service has had a strong impact as a new communication platform, such as providing on-the-ground insight from participants in the recent protests over the presidential election in Iran. But it is also being targeted by fraudsters and hackers, who using it as a way to infect people’s PCs with malicious software.

Twitter is the latest site to be targeted by a Koobface variant, said Rik Ferguson, senior security advisor for Trend Micro. Other sites have included Bebo, Hi5, Friendster and LiveJournal, according to the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team.

“Koobface has a long, inglorious history and has been relatively successful at infecting machines,” Ferguson said.

At least a couple hundred accounts have been infected by Koobface’s latest efforts, according to Ryan Flores, an advanced threats researcher, writing on Trend’s blog. When it made its first appearance a couple of weeks ago on Twitter, Koobface was just sending out three shortened URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) leading to malware. Flores wrote that Koobface is sending out more bad links this time around. (Full story here…)
